The secret of martial health and longevity (Bu jyu hi)

The Bu Yu Hi is a document that has been given over the years to select students by my martial arts teacher Hatsumi Sensei. It usually given with little explanation except, “this is important”. There will be no explanation given here as well. Each must interpret and take what meanings they may for themselves. I did not translate this document for several years because I felt that no translation would be enough. Japanese has this fantastic aspect of vagueness and multiple meanings due to the Chinese characters that make up part of it`s writing system. When reading a document as such, it feels more like receiving images than reading a composition. Ten people would most assuredly translate it ten different ways. The following translation is one of the many that I wrote. It is my sincere hope that it may allow you to capture an image and enrich your training and life.

“The universe and all living things are given life by the Great Divine Spirit of our Ancestors. This spirit protects us, brings us happiness, and bestows prosperity upon us. We live not by our power, but by the power of the light of our ancestors which sees thru all Heaven and Earth.

We, living beings, must only, with all our heart, protect and transmit this Way of our Divine Ancestry. If, with single minded determination, we swear devotion to sweeping wickedness from our hearts, our houses will surely be protected by this Great Divinity.

The form of the spirit that lights the great true path, this brilliant light along with the elixir of immortality will protect those people of true perfect light.”

Since 1994, Paul Masse has been living in Japan and training consistently two to three times a week directly with Grand Master Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei. No other foreigner has trained this long and consistently with Grand Master Hatsumi Sensei. This is surely one realization of the expression, 武風一貫, Bufu Ikkan or Devotion to the Martial Winds.
